Preparing for Motherhood: A Complete Guide for Expecting Moms in Orlando

Expecting mother posing with flowing blue fabric during a luxury maternity photoshoot in Orlando, Florida

Pregnancy is about more than preparing for your baby. It's about preparing for YOU.

From choosing your Orlando maternity photographer and planning your maternity portraits to finding trusted prenatal care, lactation support, childcare and postpartum resources, building your support team before your baby arrives can make the transition into motherhood feel more supported and intentional.

As a maternity and motherhood photographer in Orlando, I have the privilege of meeting women during one of the most meaningful chapters of their lives. Over the years, I've learned that the best maternity experience isn't simply about beautiful photographs—it's about surrounding yourself with people you trust and creating a plan for the journey ahead.

1. Start With Your Maternity Photography Experience

Your pregnancy will only last for a short season, but your maternity portraits can become part of your family's story for generations.

When choosing a maternity photographer in Orlando, look beyond beautiful images. Consider the entire experience:

  • Does the photographer guide you through posing?

  • Is there a maternity wardrobe available?

  • Do they understand flattering lighting for pregnancy?

  • Do they help you plan your session?

  • Do they offer professional hair and makeup?

  • Do they create artwork, albums or prints?

  • Does their photography style match your vision?

At Andrea Ruff Studios in Oviedo, maternity sessions are designed as a complete experience rather than simply an hour in front of the camera. I help mothers plan their wardrobe, posing, lighting and overall vision so their portraits feel personal and artistic.

Every mother is different, which is why I believe there should never be two identical maternity sessions.

2. Take Care of Your Body During Pregnancy

Pregnancy can put tremendous physical demands on your body.

This is where having the right professionals in your corner can make a difference.

One of the people I recommend considering is the amazing Chiropractor Dr. Erica Daoud, https://www.centralfloridabirthnetwork.org/directory/serenity-orlando-chiropractic-and-acupuncture, who offers Mobile & in-person chiropractic care and acupuncture, servicing Central Florida. Specialized in prenatal and pediatric care.

Whether you're experiencing the physical changes that come with pregnancy or simply want professional guidance for your changing body, having a practitioner who understands the needs of expecting mothers can be a valuable part of your pregnancy support team.

Always discuss any new treatment or care with your healthcare provider to make sure it's appropriate for your individual pregnancy.

  1. Find a Midwife or Birth Professional You Trust

One of the most important decisions during pregnancy is choosing the right person to guide and support you through your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum journey.

I'm so fortunate to know Constance Tucker, founder of Sunshine Midwife, and I love being able to recommend her as a resource for expecting mothers in Central Florida.

Constance is a licensed midwife with more than 30 years of experience in the medical field. Through Sunshine Midwife, she provides personalized maternity care that extends from pregnancy through postpartum, including prenatal care, hospital birth support, and postpartum care.

What I particularly love about her approach is the emphasis on making mothers feel heard, informed, respected, and supported throughout their journey. Sunshine Midwife also offers longer prenatal visits, ongoing communication, birth planning, and collaborative care when additional medical expertise is needed.

Whether you're expecting your first baby or adding another little one to your family, having a trusted professional who understands your goals and can help you navigate your pregnancy and birth can make such a difference.

My recommendation: Don't wait until you're close to your due date to build your birth team. Start researching your options early and find the professionals who make you feel comfortable and confident.

4. Prepare for Breastfeeding Before Baby Arrives

One of the biggest mistakes new mothers can make is assuming breastfeeding will automatically be easy.

Sometimes it is.

Sometimes it isn't.

And getting help early isn't a failure, it's preparation.

That's why I love introducing expecting mothers to Giovana Rorato, MD (Brazil), IBCLC

Founder & Lactation Consultant owner of Lactation Station Florida in Oviedo. https://lactationstationfl.com/about/

Lactation Station provides professional lactation support, including help with breastfeeding and pumping concerns. Their Oviedo location is at 1351 Alafaya Trail, and they also provide information about insurance coverage and virtual support.

My advice?

Don't wait until you're exhausted and frustrated to figure out who you're going to call.

Put your lactation specialist on your support-team list before your baby arrives.

5. Prepare the Nursery, but Don't Forget About Your Own Recovery Space

Of course, getting the nursery ready is exciting.

Choosing the crib.

Organizing the tiny clothes.

Washing blankets.

Setting up the changing station.

But I also encourage moms to think about their own recovery space.

Where will you rest?

Where will you feed the baby?

Where will you keep water and snacks?

What will make those first few weeks easier?

Preparing your environment ahead of time can help you focus more on recovering and bonding with your baby once you come home.

6. Do You Have Childcare You Can Trust?

This is something I wish more expecting parents thought about before the baby arrives.

Even if you're planning to stay home, there may eventually be a moment when you need help.

Maybe you return to work.

Maybe you need someone for a few hours so you can sleep.

Maybe you simply need time for yourself.

Finding someone you trust with your baby is not something you want to figure out in an emergency.

That's why I love recommending Annelise Lankford, owner of Twinkle Toes Nanny Agency. https://twinkletoesnanny.com/orlando/

Annelise understands firsthand how overwhelming it can be to find dependable childcare. Her agency connects families with professional caregivers and handles the screening and matching process. Twinkle Toes states that its caregivers undergo screening, interviews, background checks, and other vetting before working with families.

Your support system doesn't have to mean doing everything yourself.

Sometimes the best thing you can do for your family is allow someone trustworthy to help.

7. And Then There's YOU

This may be the part I care about most.

After the baby arrives, everyone asks:

"How's the baby?"

And of course, that's important.

But someone should also ask:

"How are YOU?"

Your body has just done something extraordinary.

You don't need to rush into "getting your body back."

You need time to heal.

But when you're medically cleared and ready to start becoming active again, having the right support can make the process much more enjoyable.

That's why I love connecting moms with Courtney Hovinen owner of Pretty in Pink Fitness, https://www.prettyinpinkfitness.com/ who specializes in helping moms work toward becoming stronger and healthier while navigating motherhood.

The goal isn't to punish your body for changing.

It's to rebuild strength, confidence, and energy in a way that fits your new life.

Always get appropriate medical clearance before beginning postpartum exercise.

Your Motherhood Support Checklist

Before your baby arrives, ask yourself:

☐ Have I scheduled my maternity photography session?

☐ Do I have a healthcare provider I trust?

☐ Have I considered prenatal chiropractic care?

☐ Do I know who I can contact for lactation support?

☐ Is the nursery ready?

☐ Have I created a comfortable recovery space for myself?

☐ Do I have reliable childcare options?

☐ Have I chosen my birth support team?

☐ Do I have a postpartum plan?

☐ Have I thought about how I want to care for my body after pregnancy?

☐ Do I have people I can call when I simply need help?

Motherhood Was Never Meant to Be Done Alone

The biggest lesson I want expecting mothers to take from this is simple:

You don't have to do everything yourself.

Build your team.

Ask questions.

Find professionals you trust.

Accept help.

And give yourself permission to enjoy this chapter instead of constantly worrying about the next one.

Because someday you'll look back at these photographs, at your growing belly, at the woman you were before your baby arrived—and you'll realize just how extraordinary this season really was.

And that's exactly why I believe your maternity portraits matter.

They aren't just pictures of your belly.

They're photographs of the beginning of your motherhood story
