Getting ready for a maternity photoshoot can be a little overwhelming if you do not know what to expect. These tips will help ensure that your session goes smoothly and the results are everything you hope for.

1. Best time to book is between 28 and 32 weeks

Schedule your session between 28 and 32 weeks of pregnancy. why? because, this is when your bump is beautifully round, but you’re still comfortable enough to pose.

2. Check your photographer's client's closet to have an idea of what you are looking for

Opt for outfits that highlight your baby bump. Maxi dresses, fitted tops, and flowing gowns are popular choices.

Consider coordinating colors and styles if your partner or family will be in the photos. (prefer solid colors for your partner and kids if any)

Bring a few different outfits to have a variety of looks.

Share your ideas and vision with your photographer ahead of time. Whether you want a classic, elegant look or something more playful and creative, let them know so they can plan accordingly.

3. Pamper Yourself

Get a good night's sleep before your session to ensure you look rested and radiant.

Consider getting your hair and makeup done professionally. Many photographers offer this service or can recommend someone.

Your hands and feet will appear in almost all of your images, so you want them looking good!  I typically recommend a neutral and something fresh and light. We want your images to feel classic and timeless!

Put on some non-greasy lotion. A couple hours before your session, take time to apply some non-greasy lotion to reduce any dry spots on your skin. Be sure to avoid using any artificial tanners or spray tans as they may give your skin an unnatural orange look.

Make sure you have the right undergarments. Give some thought on your underwear and bras as well. For example , if you’re wearing a white dress, you don’t want to wear dark panties that will show through the fabric. And if you plan on doing partially nude images, make sure to bring along lacy undergarments that will look good in your photos. I always recommend nude underwear and strapless bras, and some black and white underwear. I highly recommend getting some nipple pasties as well.

4. Hydrate and Eat Lightly

Prepare on the day of your session. Stay hydrated and don’t skip meals. It’s critical to drink plenty of water (I recommend gatorade) both before and during your session. Hydrated skin will look fresh, and staying hydrated will help keep your energy up throughout the shoot. And even if you have a case of nerves about steeping in front of the camera, be sure to eat before your session. Pack a bag of extra snacks and any other items you think you may need throughout your maternity shoot.

5. Bring Props and Accessories

Personalize your session with meaningful props like baby shoes, ultrasound photos, or a favorite blanket.

Accessories like flower crowns, scarves, or statement jewelry can add a special touch to your photos.

6. Plan Your Location

Choose a location that reflects your style and comfort. Whether it’s a beautiful outdoor setting, a cozy home environment, or a professional studio, pick a place that makes you feel at ease.

Discuss location options with your photographer and consider the best time of day for lighting.

7. Involve Your Partner and Family

If your partner or other children will be in the photos, coordinate their outfits and discuss any specific poses or shots you’d like to capture together. Practicing some poses at home can help everyone feel more comfortable during the session.

Make plans for your other children.  it’s a good idea to make plans for some one to pick them up when they’re finished. That way,  they don’t have to sit through al the individual shots of you, and you don’t have to worry about keeping them calm or entertained.

8. Relax and Have Fun

Trust your photographer to guide you through the session. They have the experience to position you in the most flattering and comfortable poses.

9. Be on time

Arrive early! Planning to arrive 10-15 minutes early will ensure that your session will get started right on time and maximize all of the scheduled shooting time! Please be mindful that there are other clients and the photographer need to stick to their schedule to accommodate everyone.

following these tips, you can ensure that your maternity photoshoot is a wonderful experience and results in beautiful, memorable photos that you’ll cherish forever.
